This module aims to introduce students to the theory and practice of injection therapy as well as to develop their ability to clinically reason and to integrate the use of injection therapy as part of their management of patients with neurological dysfunction.
The module is delivered in semester three over a period of 13 weeks and consists of two main components.
The first component will introduce students to the theory and practice associated with the use of injection therapy and the second component will be a period of mentored practice in the clinical environment.
- This module provides students with the opportunity to engage in interactive teaching and learning related to injection therapy from a variety of experts in this clinical area,
- The module will provide practitioners with evidence related to competence in the extended role of injection therapy,
- Students will work alongside a mentor for the period of mentored practice which will facilitate the application of skills and knowledge in the clinical environment,
- Students will have the opportunity to network with fellow clinicians involved in developing injection therapy services,
- The module will provide evidence of master’s level learning in injection therapy that meets the standards of professional bodies.
- The skills necessary to demonstrate expert clinical reasoning in the use of injection therapy in neurological dysfunction,
- The rationale and evidence base behind injection therapy,
- The necessary skills to appraise the evidence associated with the use of injection therapy in neurological dysfunction,
- The skills necessary for technical proficiency in a range of injection sites,
- Knowledge of health and safety issues associated with injection therapy,
- The contribution of different rehabilitation strategies post injection therapy,
- Key ethical issues related to injection therapy.
How will this course be taught
This module will be delivered through a range of methods, including, seminars, workshops, and practical laboratory sessions. The taught component of the module is taught across 6 days delivered in three blocks:
- 18 – 20 May
- 26 – 27 May
- 13 July
A period of mentored practice, within the students own workplace will run alongside the module.
- Students must be registered with the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC) or similar professional body.
- Evidence of post-qualification development within the field of neurological rehabilitation.
- Applicants should hold a current Hepatitis B certificate valid for the duration of the module.
- A letter from employer giving permission to use injection therapy within scope of their practice.
- A letter of intention to commit for the duration of the module from a mentor.
- 3000 word case study
- Portfolio of evidence detailing satisfactory completion of a minimum of 10 injections under supervision
